「What's the use of a blog if you can't hype a portfolio company occasionally?」

「Shinya Akamine President and CEO
Prior to Postini, Shinya held various VP and general manager positions with software companies. He comes most recently from Cygnus Solutions, an open source software supplier (acquired by Redhat). Shinya was formerly a management consultant with McKinsey & Company and a post-doctoral fellow at NTT's worldwide research lab in Tokyo. Shinya holds a BS, MS, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford.」

肩書きは、Executive Vice President, Corporate Strategy and Technology & Chief Technology Officerであり、

「Shane Robison is responsible for shaping the company's overall technology agenda and for leading the company's strategy and corporate development efforts including mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and partnerships. He leads the technology and strategy councils as well as the development of future technology roadmaps, working closely with HP's business units and HP Labs.」

「Robison has served as a coordinator, ensuring that the voices of HP's far-flung researchers and technology executives can be heard in upper management and across departmental lines. As a former programmer, he understands technology. As a manager, he is trying to align the company's research ideas with business realities. And when disputes occur, he arbitrates.」
「”He is setting up an infrastructure that is conducive to collaboration,'' said Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, a computer science professor at the University of California-Berkeley and one of Robison's advisers at HP. ”He listens a lot.''」
「Since the merger closed last spring, Robison has organized a subcommittee of the HP board to investigate technology, formed advisory boards of customers and famed technologists to offer advice about tech trends and helped HP recruit seasoned researchers like computer pioneer Alan Kay.」
「Robison supervises a team of technology executives from each of HP's business divisions and oversees Dick Lampman, who runs HP Labs and its 750 researchers. He directs talks regularly with his counterparts at partner companies like Intel and visits HP's customers as often as three times a week.”Shane is not attempting to be a deep technologist in any one area,'' said Pat Gelsinger of Intel. “He tries to be a broad technologist who can integrate strategies.''」
「Robison also encourages researchers to share their ideas with each other. To showcase ideas from throughout the company, he is organizing an internal HP conference in April at a resort in Keystone, Colo. HP set up the conference so that 500 researchers could attend and listen to authors present 40 to 50 papers over three days, but the company received more than 1,500 submissions from engineers in all divisions. From conferences like this, Robison believes that HP will learn “where we will place our next big bets in research.''」

この記事のタイトルは、「How the tech crash became a generational divide」。

「For the Silicon Valley workers most deeply affected by the implosion of the tech sector, the real impact of the downturn can't be measured by money alone. It is just as much about time … time invested in a career, time to rebuild ruined finances, time to hang on for the cycle of innovation to turn yet again.」
「For many workers in their 20s who came to the valley to ride the dot-com wave, the current recession is at worst a minor setback, not a life-altering event. Those in their 30s had farther to fall. But with time to start anew, they've come to see the downturn as a chance to re-examine the role of work in their lives. Most workers in their 40s don't have time for introspection. They worry about just surviving in world of diminishing choices. Many tech veterans in their 50s enter the final stages of their working lives facing a dilemma: They cannot afford to retire, yet they are at a disadvantage in a job market that favors younger workers with cutting-edge skills.」

20代の物語は、「Free to start over」。
30代の物語は、「A time to embrace life」。
40代の物語は、「Workers in their 40s feel trapped」。
50代の物語は、「Time running out for valley tech veterans」。

「Chief Executive Greg Ballard said the company spends $3 million every quarter to defend its ReplayTV device against 28 movie studios and television companies. That amounts to 20 percent of SonicBlue's expenses: money the company could use to turn a profit, or hire 120 more employees to develop new technologies.」

「Hank Barry, one-time Napster chief executive and a partner with Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, said his firm, which invested millions in the pioneering yet controversial file-swapping technology, is now reluctant to risk funding new, cutting-edge technologies with the potential to violate intellectual property laws. It recently refused to back a software company whose technology could stream music over cellular phone networks for precisely this reason. “In these very uncertain times, the investors do the prudent thing -- they stay away,'' Barry said. “And innovation loses out.''」
「cutting-edge technologies with the potential to violate intellectual property laws」には投資したくない気分。

「How a ragtag band of software geeks is threatening Sun and Microsoft--and turning the computer world upside down」
